Preoperative micronutrient gap: high prevalence yet we focus on postoperative treatment - systematic review

Activity: Talk or presentationOral presentation

Description

This is an oral presentation at IFSO 2024 conference at Melbourne, Australia.

Aim: To determine the effect of preoperative micronutrient repletion strategies on preoperative and early postoperative micronutrient status.

Methodology: Systematic review

Implication: The preoperative micronutrient repletion strategies were heterogenous and varied in effectiveness. Oral supplements may support repletion of vitamin B6, folate, vitamin C, and calcium; and iron infusion may improve ferritin levels. The practice was likely to be heterogenous too, given that most included studies were of observational design. Future studies using interventional design are needed to formulate guidelines and then to standardise the practice.
