Additional information

The ISO/IEC AWI 23595 standard highlights the importance of evaluating user experience in the design of AR, MR, and VR technologies. It recommends collecting both subjective feedback, such as user opinions and perceptions, and objective data that can be measured and analysed. Subjective evaluation involves using questionnaires and user testing in controlled environments. Users rate their experience based on metrics including the sense of “being there” in the virtual environment (immersion), device comfort during extended use (comfort), the smoothness and intuitiveness of interaction with the virtual environment (interactivity), and visual factors such as image clarity, colour accuracy, and motion quality (visual effects). Auditory effects, including the clarity and immersiveness of sound and their ability to create a realistic sense of space, are also evaluated. The standard suggests leveraging platforms that record and analyse real-time data on user feedback, scores, and usage patterns. Objective evaluation measures physiological and behavioural indicators to assess user experience independently of self-reported feedback. Examples include heart rate, which reflects tension or excitement; brain activity measured through EEG, indicating focus and fatigue; and galvanic skin response, which assesses emotional reactions and stress levels. Other measures include operation frequency, tracking how often users interact with specific features, and eye-tracking data to determine user attention focus. By integrating subjective feedback with objective measurements, the standard aims to create a comprehensive evaluation model. This approach helps developers gain deeper insights into user experiences and informs the improvement of AR, MR, and VR technology design.
