Does one size fit all? Perspectives on optimizing healthcare professionals’ collaboration in stressful situations and implications for training design.

By drawing on knowledge from multiple domains, this thesis seeks to bridge theory and practice in order to derive meaningful design principles for training future healthcare professionals to perform under stress, by addressing the following question:
How can insights from literature, experienced healthcare professionals, and students enhance our understanding of collaboration and communication under stress in high-performance healthcare settings and potentially improve training?

To address this question, this thesis integrates multiple sources of knowledge. This includes not only synthesizing existing literature (Chapter 2), but also exploring perspectives, beliefs and rationales of professionals – what they think and value (Chapter 3) – and examining actual professional practice – what professionals do (Chapter 4). Equally important is the perspective of learners (Chapter 5): understanding how students perceive, interpret, and experience both professional practice and the educational context provides critical insights for aligning instructional design with their needs and development.
